National Security and Foreign Policy

Congressman Johnson is dedicated to strengthening national security, supporting service members, and protecting democratic values at home and abroad. He has been a vocal advocate for congressional oversight of military actions, voting to limit unauthorized use of military force. His focus on human rights is reflected in initiatives like the Berta Cáceres Human Rights in Honduras Act, which limits U.S. funds for military operations linked to human rights abuses. Congressman Johnson also introduced legislation to safeguard election security, co-sponsored measures to hold Iran and North Korea accountable, and supported the 9/11/ Commission's recommendations. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, he consistently prioritizes the welfare of our Armed Forces and a responsible defense budget. Congressman Johnson will continue promoting diplomatic solutions, transparent governance, and policies that address climate change's impact on security.

On Wednesday, Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04) voted in favor of H.R. 2048, USA FREEDOM Act. This bipartisan bill ends the government’s bulk collection of telephone metadata – replacing it with a new process in which the government must get approval on a case-by-case basis from the FISA Court before asking phone companies for specific call records. Hank Johnson (GA04) took steps to stop the Republican shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, voting to have the House consider a clean funding bill that could be signed into law before the critical agency is forced to shut down on February 28.
