In less than two weeks, Maxwell Blackman will leave home to attend the U.S. Military Academy in hopes of continuing his family's legacy as military corpsman.

"I was surprised to find out I got in because the acceptance rate is so low," said Maxwell, a 2017 Arabia Mountain High graduate.

U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson recognized military veterans who served in the post-Korean War era, including those who served in the Vietnam War, on Friday.

Johnson held an "Extending the Legacy" program at the Lou Walker Senior Center in Lithonia as part of commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

Michelle Carmona was named the grand prize winner of Rep. Hank Johnson's, D-Ga., Fourth Congressional District Art Competition during a ceremony at the Lou Walker Senior Center in Lithonia on Saturday. Her photograph, "Nature," received a $24,000 scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The annual competition serves as an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in our Congressional District. The Artistic Discovery Contest is open to all high school students in the 4th District. The winning artwork of our district's competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. The exhibit in Washington will include the winning artwork from all participating districts from around the country.
