Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The annual competition serves as an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in our Congressional District. The Artistic Discovery Contest is open to all high school students in the 4th District. The winning artwork of our district's competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. The exhibit in Washington will include the winning artwork from all participating districts from around the country.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—On Feb. 15, 2017, Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) was joined by Congresswomen Eddie Bernice Johnson and Sheila Jackson Lee to honor great inventors at "African American Inventors: Past and Present."

After offering welcoming remarks, Congressman Johnson honored Dr. Lonnie Johnson with an award for achievement. Dr. Johnson, who served as a judge for Congressman Johnson's inaugural Congressional App Challenge, is a piece of living history. He is an inventor and scientist who made himself a household name when he created the world-famous "super soaker" water gun toy.

LITHONIA, GA – On Saturday, April 29th at 11 a.m., Rep Hank Johnson (GA-04), will be hosting the 2017 Congressional Arts Competition Reception for high school students in the Fourth Congressional District.

The annual event will be held at the Lou Walker Senior Center. Congressman Johnson is excited about showcasing some great young artists.

Each year thousands of dollars in scholarships from SCAD and the Art Institute of Atlanta, are given to students across the district. Last year the competition awarded four college scholarships worth a total of $35,000.

He told NBC the old optimism of the civil rights movement was a little superficial and now needed to be tempered with a solid realism.

ROCKDALE, GA – On Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04) recognized the top three students of his Congressional App Challenge — a competition that encourages U.S. high school students to create their own mobile applications.

Eight students from the Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology made up three teams that swept the competition. The reception was held at their school.

CLARKSTON, G.A.—On Jan. 15, Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04) co-hosted an event to take a stand against the GOP agenda and its budget.

The town hall was co-hosted by Clarkston Mayor Ted Terry.

The event was held to hold the GOP accountable for their budget that calls for drastic cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and dismantling the Affordable Care Act. Congressman Johnson praised the Obama administration at the event and echoed the voices of many guest speakers who have pledged to hold the GOP in Washington accountable.
