WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Hank Johnson's (D-GA) Preventing Termination of Utility Services in Bankruptcy Act became law today when it passed both Houses of Congress and was expected to be signed by the president as part of the 2021 Omnibus spending package.

The bill, which Congressman Johnson took over from retiring Congressman Conyers in 2018, would end the practice of utility companies forcing individuals to pay additional assurances simply because they have filed for bankruptcy.

Congressman: Private company, ICE makes a living by feasting on the misery of the detainees

Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04), chair of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet, participated in a Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and House Judiciary Committee oversight visit to investigate Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Georgia, where multiple immigrant women have been subjected to alleged hysterectomies and other medical procedures performed without their consent.

Hank Johnson (GA-04), chairman of the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet, today announced The Open Courts Act of 2020, H.R. 8235, which would modernize the federal judiciary's court records systems and eliminate the paywall (called PACER) that currently forces the public to pay more than $140 million each year to access these records, passed the House. The bill passed the House of Representatives in 2010 but stalled in the Senate.
