On July 30, I marked the 49th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid by taking to the House floor to celebrate these twin poverty fighting pillars and to continue speaking about the new State Medicaid Expansion Caucus (SMEC), which I proudly co-chair.
Today, we mark the 49th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). Although the Supreme Court took a step backwards last year by holding that the formula in Section 4 of the Act was unconstitutional and could no longer be used, I remain hopeful that Republicans and Democrats can come together to fix this mistake and pass the Voting Rights Act Amendment.
The Administration announced that President Obama signed the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order on July 31. Among other things, the Order will prohibit federal contractors from using forced arbitration clauses in employment contracts involving civil and sexual assault and harassment disputes.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Reps. G.K. Butterfield (D-NC) and Hank Johnson (D-GA) marked the 49th anniversary of the enactment of Medicare and Medicaid. President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law on July 30, 1965.
The Government of Bahrain recently expelled Mr. Tom Malinowski, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. Rep. Johnson and 15 of his House colleagues sent the following letter to the King of Bahrain urging that Assistant Secretary Malinowski be welcomed back to the country so that he can resume his diplomatic efforts aimed at improving human rights in Bahrain.
