Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), the lead sponsor of the 2021 Judiciary Act, called the current makeup "a Supreme Court at crisis with itself and with our democracy" where "basic freedoms are under assault" from the 6-3 conservative supermajority on the bench.

The Supreme Court isn't susceptible to the popular vote the way Congress is, Johnson said, and it has used that fact to amass power. "It's making decisions that usurp the power of the legislative and executive branches," he said.

Georgia Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson asked Murray why Thomas, "would exclude court review of that due process right." Thomas is in an interracial marriage, and other critics have also asked why he did not cite the case in his opinion.

Murray said she was "confused" about why that case wasn't included in "Justice Thomas' long laundry list of rights to be overturned, but it surely would be there."

"Could it be that he himself enjoys that right conferred under Loving?" Johnson asked.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to continued right-wing threats to Georgians' personal liberties, Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) on Tuesday voted to enshrine marriage equality into federal law. The Respect for Marriage Act will officially repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a defunct and discriminatory statute excluding same-sex couples from marriage under federal law. This legislation will also codify new protections ensuring that no married couple can be denied protections and benefits under federal law based on sex, race, ethnicity or national origin.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On June 21, the winner of Congressman Hank Johnson's (GA-04) 2022 Congressional Art Competition, Christopher Ramos of Newton County, was honored in Washington, D.C. as part of a national reception to honor arts winners from across the country.
Ramos, a freshman from Newton High School now a rising sophomore, was recognized for his piece titled "bereavement." Ramos was awarded the grand prize for the Fourth Congressional District, which is a $12,000 scholarship to the Savanah College of Art & Design (SCAD).
