Today, I write with a heavy heart

June 4, 2020

Dear Friends,

Today, I write with a heavy heart.

Things have boiled over in America this week. The aftermath of George Floyd’s murder -- stacked on top of the vigilante killing of Ahmaud Arbery and the disproportionate effect COVID-19 is having in the African-American community has laid bare the deep inequities in our nation.

Many of us are sick and tired of being sick and tired. I expressed our collective grief and concern in my speech on the House floor last week.

While I have always pledged to take care of home first as your Congressman, I also pride myself as a thoughtful legislator and statesman. Since 2014, I have been introducing police reform bills that, taken together, would help us a nation and society get past what we’re experiencing today, bring justice to the system, and level the playing field. Unless and until we address police being able to operate with impunity and commit acts of violence against unarmed citizens with no consequences, we are never going to make any real progress.

I’m working right now to ensure these proposals are part of the conversation in Congress on the path forward.

For more on my police reform bills, click HERE. On Sunday, I was pleased to join MSNBC’s Ali Velshi to discuss my thoughts and legislation. With all the talk about sending the U.S. military into our streets, here is my proposal to demilitarize the police.
