Dear Friends,

This week, I'm taking important steps to help deliver for Georgia's Fourth District during the budget reconciliation process.

This is the $3.5 trillion investment you may have heard about in human and physical infrastructure, as well as a fairer tax code, known as the Build Back Better Act. I sit on three committees charged with writing a piece of this bill. Two weeks ago, I told you about the work that the Committee on Oversight and Reform did to start this process. This week, the Judiciary and Transportation and Infrastructure Committees will begin their work.

In the Judiciary Committee's portion of the Build Back Better Act, we'll work to make pivotal investments in community-based violence reduction and human infrastructure that reflect our commitment to a stronger U.S. economy and a vibrant future for all Americans. I look forward to taking up this bold, urgently needed proposal Monday and bringing it one step closer to President Biden's desk.

In Transportation & Infrastructure, I'll be working throughout Tuesday on cleaner and more equitable infrastructure, such as new investments in transit that provide access to affordable housing, local transportation priorities, clean water initiatives, highways funds, community climate incentive grants, and neighborhood access and equity grants.

Speaking of equity, on Sept. 10, I introduced the House companion to a Senate bill being introduced by U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) and Rev. Raphael Warnock that would for the first time fund construction of public transportation specifically connecting affordable housing with transit networks in order to serve riders and commuters in low-income communities. The Public Transportation Expansion Act will create a Federal grant program to fund public transportation expansion to serve low-income communities and connect affordable housing with transit networks. I am pleased that this program will be included in the Build Back Better Act, and will be provided with $10 billion.

This weekend, we marked 20 years since 9/11 when America faced the most devastating attack on U.S. soil since Pearl Harbor. The September 11, 2001, attacks took nearly 3,000 lives and changed our way of life. We remember and honor the innocent civilians & first responders who lost their lives.

Also on Saturday, it was my great honor to present one of my constituents, Mr. Hank Thomas, with a proclamation from President Biden honoring him as an original Freedom Rider. The Freedom Rides, which lasted from May to November 1961, included more than 400 black and white Americans who risked their lives to challenge Jim Crow laws – particularly public transportation – in the South. Mr. Thomas is one of the original 13 riders. I'm working in Congress to get the Freedom Riders recognized with the Congressional Gold Medal as well.

As always, I appreciate your time and feedback. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to represent you in Congress. If you have an issue with a federal government agency, need help with an eviction or a foreclosure, please don't hesitate to call my district office at 770-987-2291. Thank you!
