Dear Friends,

I want to wish all our mothers in Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District and beyond a very Happy Mother’s Day 2016.

On Sunday, we honor our mothers who have given us so much. Whether our mothers are single or married, LGBT or straight, adoptive, biological or foster, all should be rightfully honored.

As the foundation of our lives and the glue that holds our families and society together, our mothers are the ones who help us strive for new heights and stick by us no matter the circumstances or challenges.

For me, my mother Christine Callier (pictured above) is the one who really set me on the path I find myself today – a rewarding career as a defense attorney, judge, county commissioner and now congressman.

But more importantly, she helped shape me into a good and decent human being.

While I was still in elementary school in Washington, D.C., my mother – a school teacher her entire career – made me read articles from the front page of The Washington Post to her every night after dinner while she washed dishes. Her goal was to make sure that I was a great reader. It worked and helped me develop an early interest in politics, policy and the law.

I also want to honor my beautiful wife Mereda Davis Johnson – together we have raised two great kids who are now young adults in their 20s.

Women and our mothers are the backbone of our nation and the drivers of progress. They now represent more than half the workforce. This is why I’m so proud to support policies that help our mothers: equal pay for equal work, family leave, paid sick days and health policies that allow women to decide what’s best for them and their families.

Our mothers deserve all our love and devotion but they also deserve policies that allow them to be all that they can be – not just as responsible role models but as creative, growing, productive members of equal standing in our families and our economy.

So thank you mom, Mereda and all our mothers who contribute so much to our lives and our communities. Simply put: You are the best!
