DECATUR, GA – On Thursday, January 6, Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) held a virtual roundtable discussion titled: "Root Causes of the Insurrection: Securing Democracy For All."
As part of a national day of observances and events, the Congressman's event featured Ray of Hope Pastor Dr. Rev. Cynthia Hale as moderator with a panel of special guests from the faith and public policy disciplines.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia's 4th Congressional District and other lawmakers were trapped in the House chamber that day.
A picture captured Johnson kneeling on the Chamber floor during the rampage as insurrectionists were on the brink of breaking in.

"The critical issues that impact our day-to-day lives ― such as voting and civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate justice, and consumer and workers' rights ― are being decided by a GOP-packed conservative supermajority on a United States Supreme Court, which is destroying its own legitimacy with partisan decisions that are upending decades of precedent and progress in this nation," said Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), the bill's lead sponsor. "I want to thank Chair Jayapal and the entire Progressive Caucus for endorsing and supporting the Judiciary Act."

Last year's January 6 insurrection was a traumatic event that shook our democracy to its core. The brazen attack on our democracy also exposed America's original moral dilemma -- the demon of racism and white supremacy. As the country becomes increasingly multiracial and multicultural, efforts are underway to further destabilize our democracy.

Judiciary Committee members have introduced several other bills to modernize the judiciary's ethics, disclosure, and transparency rules, which could be swept into omnibus legislation.
"Reforms in our judiciary are needed and past due," said Rep. Hank Johnson, a Georgia Democrat who heads the House Judiciary Committee's courts subcommittee. "The covers are off, and people understand the judicial branch has done an excellent job protecting itself and insulating itself from change. But the need for change is glaring."
