Dear Friends,
As you know, the House is debating repeal of health care reform that Congress and the President passed last year. Many provisions of reform have already been implemented.
I want everyone to be aware of those provisions, because they directly impact you and your family.
I also want to hear your thoughts on health care reform, the effort to repeal it, and whether you've been impacted by the new law. Please take a few minutes to send me your thoughts or health care story. Please fill out your name and zip code and send me your thoughts. It's that easy. If you'd like me to contact you personally, please send your e-mail address, too. I can't guarantee that I'll get to everyone, but I'll certainly try.
Immediate Provisions of Health Care Reform
● Small businesses are receiving tax credits of up to 35 percent to cover their employees.
● Seniors who have previously fallen in the so-called Medicare “donut hole” are receiving $250. Beginning in this month, there is a 50% discount on prescription drugs and free preventive care for seniors in the donut hole. If you’re asking, “What is the donut hole?”, click here for more info.
● For those who are privately insured, discrimination against children with pre-existing conditions is now strictly prohibited.
● Private insurers may no longer cancel your coverage when you get sick.
● Those who have been uninsured due to a pre-existing condition now have immediate access to insurance through a temporary high‐risk pool.
● Young people may remain covered by their parents’ insurance up to their 27th birthday.
● Community Health Centers are receiving new federal assistance to bring preventative care and check-ups into communities that have been underserved.
● States are receiving federal funding to establish offices of health insurance consumer assistance where consumers can file complaints and appeals.
In 2014 when additional provisions will be implemented, it will provide:
– No discrimination against adults with pre-existing conditions
– Bans on higher premiums for women
– Limits on out-of-pocket expenses for private health plans
Thank you for your time,
