It was great to spend part of the Father's Day weekend at the Proud Fathers' Rally in support of President Obama's Fatherhood & Mentoring initiative. Thank you to my frat brothers of Omega Psi Phi and everyone who took time out of their busy weekend to participate.
Being a good father is not just about our own children, but it's about being a good mentor to all children. I urge everyone to take the President's Pledge along with me.  HIV/AIDS IN THE SOUTH: This week, I held an HIV/AIDS Roundtable on Capitol Hill with AIDS United to address the alarming new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that half of new HIV infections and AIDS diagnoses in 2009 were in the South. Improving access to healthcare and addressing a shortage of doctors who specialize in treating HIV/AIDS patients are key areas to address. By raising this issue, I hope to shed light on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the South, among women, and especially among women of color. For more, click HERE.

 EAGLE SCOUT: Congratulations to Anthony Gordon Jr., who this past weekend was honored for earning Eagle Scout during a ceremony at New Bethel A.M.E. Church in Lithonia. It was great to spend time with Anthony and his parents Inga and Anthony Gordon Sr. Young Anthony has a bright future ahead, and I was pleased to be his honored guest along with state Rep. Billy Mitchell, Commissioner Stan Watson, and Judge Greg Adams.
EXCELLENCE AT EMORY: I'm pleased to report that Emory is receiving a $450,000 National Science Foundation Award for the project: "CAREER: Understanding the Contraction Biomechanics of Platelets at the Single-Cell Level." Congratulations to director of the project Wilbur Lam.
STONE MOUNTAIN CID: Congratulations to the Stone Mountain Community Improvement District (CID) on receiving a $500,000 grant from Georgia's State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA). I understand the grant will help make critical improvements within the Mountain Industrial Boulevard corridor, and according to CID President Emory Morsberger lead to 2,000 new jobs by the end of 2013. $6 MILLION FOR CITIES: The Department of Commerce's Economic Development branch recently announced the launch of the $6 million Strong Cities, Strong Communities (SC2) Visioning Challenge to help economically distressed cities leverage innovative strategies to spur local economic and job growth.  SOUTH RIVER ALLIANCE CLEAN-UP: Don your rubber boots and lend a hand at ‘Get the Trash Out” South River clean-up Saturday, June 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will remove trash and tires from the river on both sides of Panola Shoals at Highway 155. For more, click HERE.
CHILD IMMIGRANTS: I support President Obama's more humane immigration policy as it relates to children of illegal immigrants, who were brought here by their parents when they were very young. For more, click HERE.
JOBS FOR VETERANS: The Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is holding a Veterans Hiring Fair in Detroit June 26-28. I'm working on the VA to hold a similar event here in Atlanta. But until then, I want all my constituents who need a job to know that more than 24,000 federal and private-sector jobs across the country will be available at this free event. For more, click HERE. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and U.S. Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki today unveiled a new portal on their departments’ websites designed to help military veterans find jobs in the transportation industry. The portals are available at www.dot.gov and www.va.gov.
VETERANS' HEALTH: In a continuing effort to increase Veterans’ access to mental health care, the Department of Veterans Affairs has set a goal to conduct more than 200,000 clinic-based, telemental health consultations for all mental health specialties in fiscal year 2012. When fully implemented, the expansion will provide a potential capacity of 1.2 million consultations annually. For more information, click HERE.
 CONYERS' STUDENTS: I presented Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology students Johnathan Davis and Crystal Brockington with Congressional proclamations at the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, June 12 for winning the Southeastern Regional Competition of the 20th International Environmental Project Olympiad (INEPO).
