Rep. Hank Johnson's E-Newsletter (April 8, 2011)

Dear Friends,

Despite the partial federal government shutdown my staff and I – both in Washington and in Lithonia – will remain on the job. As Henry Clay once said, “If you cannot compromise, you cannot govern.” The government should not be held hostage using controversial social policy as ransom.

CONSTITUENT SERVICES: Helping my constituents navigate the federal bureaucracy is one of the most important things I do. Our ability to work with federal agencies on your behalf will be limited due to the shutdown, but I promise we will do our best.

Essential services, including national security, air traffic control, inpatient medical services, emergency outpatient medicine, disaster assistance, prisons, borrowing and taxation, and electricity production are NOT affected by the shutdown. Social Security checks and Medicare reimbursements will continue to go out but new claims will be delayed. Veterans’ hospitals will remain open.

But some veterans services, national parks, visas & passports and other agencies will likely close. To help clarify how this shutdown might affect you and your family, please visit my Web site: “What You Should Know.”

Thanks,
