Dear Friends,

I've heard from many of you about high gas prices. America’s reliance on oil makes for a heavy burden on all Americans and small businesses. This is especially true in the Atlanta area, where getting around by car is often the only option.

I am working on long-term solutions to reduce our dependence on oil through a variety of measures, including investments in renewable energy and mass transit. But to help you and your family deal with the present difficult reality of the high cost of fuel today, I’ve created a one-stop online guide complete with links to find the cheapest gas, fuel saving tips and information on MARTA. I hope you find this useful. For more, click here.

CALLING ALL STUDENT ARTISTS: I’m looking forward to my 2011 Congressional Arts Competition, an annual event celebrating the community’s best young artists. The deadline for entries is April 12-14 and must be completed according to the competition guidelines, which are on my Web site. In addition to having your artwork at the Capitol, winners of the competition will be eligible for college scholarships from the Art Institute of Atlanta ($10,000, $5,000, and $2,500) or the Savannah College of Art and Design ($1,500 per year). VETERANS, MILITARY AND THEIR FAMILIES EXPO: We owe our service members, their families and all our veterans an immeasurable debt. To ensure they receive their full benefits, I’m holding a Veterans and Armed Forces Expo on Friday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at DeKalb Technical College in Clarkston. We’ll have Veterans Administration and other officials on hand to help file disability and pension claims, assist with employment strategies, issue home loan guaranty certificates and address mortgage concerns, answer questions about health care eligibility, and provide information to access many other benefits and services.

We’re holding this event in conjunction with DeKalb County, but all veterans, active military personnel and their families from throughout the Fourth District are welcome. We’ll post more details on the Veterans section of my Web site as they become available, so please stay tuned. For more information, e-mail veteransexpo@mail.house.gov and we will get back with you ASAP.

FLOOD SAFETY WEEK: In September 2009, Atlanta was rocked by historic floods that caused millions in damages, left thousands homeless and took 10 lives. Ninety percent of all natural disasters in the U.S. involve flooding and more than 20 percent of all flood insurance claims come from policies in moderate- to low-risk areas. During National Flood Safety Awareness Week -- March 14-18 -- the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is reminding families and businesses to take measures to ensure they are aware of their risk for flooding, to protect their homes and property from such an event, and to purchase flood insurance. 2011 WHITE HOUSE EASTER EGG ROLL: The 2011 White House Easter Egg Roll returns this year on Monday, April 25, 2011. The event will feature live music, sports courts, cooking stations, storytelling and, of course, Easter egg rolling. Members of the public interested in attending should enter the online lottery. The lottery will be open through March 13th at 11:59 p.m. Full ticketing details can be found here. To apply for lottery tickets, click here. Commemorative 2011 White House Easter Eggs will be on sale starting March 10. For more information, please visit the National Parks Foundation: www.easter.nationalparks.org.

SURPASSING $3 MILLION IN CONSTITUENT SERVICE: Since taking office in 2007, I've worked to secure $3,168,602.38 for those seeking help from my office with Veterans and IRS issues, Social Security, Medicare and other federal agencies. Helping my constituents navigate the federal bureaucracy is one of the most important things I do.

When I first ran for office in 2006, I promised I would take care of home first. I’m here to ensure that constituents receive the money and benefits due them from the federal government. As always, I value constituents’ input and welcome their comments. Being District 4’s representative in Washington is a singular honor, and I appreciate helping constituents above everything else. Listening to residents and bringing their concerns to Washington is why I’m here. For more, click here.

Please share this e-letter with friends and family who live in the Fourth District and encourage them to sign up to receive these free online newsletters. Also, follow me on Twitter and Facebook.

Thanks,
