I want to wish everyone and their families a Happy Thanksgiving with the hope that you and your loved ones can gather safely to celebrate our blessings.
While 2021 has been another difficult year due to the pandemic, we have made significant progress by getting shots in arms, money in people’s pockets, helped our children return to school safely and put people back to work.
Georgia is now just 60,000 jobs shy of the level in February 2020 when the pandemic began. The fact that Georgia’s unemployment rate is now at just 3.1% shows the overall economy continuing to churn back toward pre-pandemic levels – I think our response in Congress to combat the situation – particularly the Rescue Plan – is a big part of that.
The American Rescue Plan is landmark, life-saving legislation that provided Georgia state government and its agencies with about $4.7 billion and the 159 counties and cities will share an additional $3.6 billion. Of that, the counties that make up Georgia’s Fourth District – DeKalb, Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton – received more than $358 million and the cities within GA-04 an additional $60 million in funding to help struggling families and businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic and save essential services.
So, for this we can all be thankful.
I was proud to vote recently in favor of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the bipartisan infrastructure law, which represents generational change and investment in America’s future.
The infrastructure law will create millions of good-paying union jobs with a once-in-a-century investment in rebuilding hard infrastructure in Georgia, including roads and bridges, transit, rail, clean drinking water and wastewater systems and high-speed broadband networks.
I also voted in favor of the Build Back Better Act, which now goes to the Senate. When I return to Washington after the holidays and moving forward into 2022, I will continue to work with my colleagues to pass this transformative bill and get it to President Biden’s desk for his signature.
Build Back Better delivers once-in-a-generation action to bring down the everyday costs that burden Georgia families. This landmark legislation creates good paying jobs, cuts middle class taxes and lowers the costs of health care, childcare and family care. Importantly, this legislation is fully paid-for by asking the wealthiest few and biggest corporations pay their fair share, and so the Build Back Better Act will both grow the economy and fight inflation.
As always, I appreciate your time and feedback. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to represent you in Congress. Thanks to the vaccines and rapid testing, many of us are gathering for Thanksgiving in person safely with family and friends for the first time since the start of the pandemic. If you have not received your life-saving vaccine, it’s not too late.
If you have an issue with a federal government agency, please don’t hesitate to call my district office at 770-987-2291. Thank you and have a safe and blessed Thanksgiving holiday!
