Dear Neighbor:

Like many of you, I am continually reminded of the impact of economic uncertainties on our families and communities. I want to share some encouraging economic news for Georgia - last month over 15,000 jobs were created in our State, which led to the biggest drop in unemployment in five years. This is great progress and we should welcome it. However, as Georgia Department of Employment and Economic Development Commissioner Dan McElroy said, “it’s still too early to say whether the state economy has reached a turning point.” That's why I will keep working to strengthen job gains in Georgia.

After one year, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is working exactly as it was designed to: creating jobs through investing in our schools, infrastructure, clean energy and more. In the final months of 2009, the Recovery Act created or saved over 12,000 jobs in Georgia in areas such as family services, neighborhood development centers, school renovations, and much more. To see a map of Recovery projects in your neighborhood, please visit Recovery.gov.

The next step is to get a jobs bill signed into law to continue this momentum and put more Georgians back to work. I am hopeful that the House will adopt legislation called the Put America to Work Act, which will create one million jobs by investing in local public works projects across the country.

Health Reform: Only the Beginning

Over the past year, we've seen both progress and setbacks in the health care debate. Special interests continue to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to stall real reform. Despite these efforts, the House and Senate have both passed historic bills that will lower costs, protect people who have insurance, and provide coverage for the millions who don't. President Obama announced a hybrid version of these bills, and I'm studying it closely.

At the end of the day, inaction and the status quo simply are not an option. Just ask the nearly 50 million Americans who lack health insurance (including over 400,000 Georgians), the underinsured, and those who have seen their premiums double - or triple, or worse. I'm not about to give up on health reform now, not when we're so close to making history and start fixing the broken health insurance system.

Health reform will pass, and it will be a beginning. We need this legislation to enact the health care reform we believe in. Extending coverage to millions of Americans will be an important step in the right direction.

To all: have a safe and peaceful, peaceful, and relaxing weekend.
