Congressman Johnson's E-Newsletter for Tuesday, October 1, 2019
A lot has happened in just the past 10 days. Things change quickly in today's political world, and you're certainly not alone if the continued news of President Trump's wrongdoing leaves your head spinning. That's just one of the reasons I'm holding more town halls next week as part of my Moving the Fourth Forward town hall series – to meet with you to discuss the issues of the day and make sense of what's happening both in Washington and here in Georgia. On Tuesday, October 8 from 6-7:30 p.m., the Rockdale Career Academy will be hosting my third town hall of the series at 1064 Culpepper Drive in Conyers. (To RSVP, click HERE.) I'm holding my fourth town hall in the series on Thursday, October 10 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the historic courthouse on the square in Covington, 1132 Usher Street. (To RSVP, click HERE.) Please come out and make your voices heard. For more information, call our district office at 770-987-2291.
IMPEACHMENT: Last week, the floodgates opened on an impeachment investigation into the President after a whistleblower complaint alleged that he jeopardized national security by pressing Ukraine to interfere with our 2020 elections. By the President's own admission, he discussed with Ukraine President Zelensky his desire that Ukraine open a corruption investigation against former Vice President Joe Biden. Attempting to coerce a foreign government into digging up dirt on a political opponent, then trying to cover it up crosses a red line. No one is above the law, and President Trump's repeated obstruction and flagrant disregard of his oath of office demands the issuance of Articles of Impeachment. On September 24, I became the first member of the Georgia delegation to call for the impeachment investigation, and I look forward to continuing the investigation into President Trump and the allegations set forth in the whistleblower complaint.
ACCESS TO THE COURTHOUSE, ACCESS TO JUSTICE: As Chair of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet, I held a wide-ranging hearing recently on "The Federal Judiciary in the 21st Century: Ensuring the Public's Right of Access to the Courts." The hearing helped build a record for oversight and legislative efforts concerning judicial supervision of sealed court filings, including issues affecting public health and safety, and delved into whether reform is needed to provide greater public access. MILITARY ACADEMY APPLICATIONS: I am now accepting applications for congressional nominations to the military service academies – U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis), the U.S. Air Force Academy (Colorado Springs) or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy – for the Class of 2024. The deadline for receipt of completed applications and supporting materials is Monday, October 28 at 5 p.m. in my district office. For the online application and more on the process, click HERE.
As always, I appreciate your time and feedback. Please remember you can reach me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well as e-mails, phone calls and letters. Please share the information about my upcoming town halls in Conyers on October 8 and Covington on October 10. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to represent you in Congress.
