Rep Johnson’s Statement on FBI Letter to GOP Congressional Chairmen

October 28, 2016

DECATUR, GA – The Honorable Henry C. “Hank” Johnson, Jr. (GA-04) Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law released the following statement in response to FBI Director James Comey’s letter to eight Republican Committee Chairmen:

“The long-standing practice of the FBI is to avoid publicly disclosing the existence of investigations,” said Rep. Johnson. “Director Comey violated that rule by notifying certain members of Congress that the FBI was reviewing new information that pertained to the closed e-mail investigation. Coming during early voting with just 11 days before the last day to vote, Director Comey should have known that congressional Republicans would use the notice for political purposes. His decision to notify Congress with this nebulous information was unwise and imprudent, and has done a grave disservice to the nation.”
