Rep. Johnson’s Remarks on Dallas Shootings and Deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) made following remarks concerning the shootings in Dallas, Texas and the shooting deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile:
“I emphatically condemn the despicable ambush and assassination of five police officers and the wounding of seven more last night in Dallas. My prayers go out to the victims, and I stand in solidarity with the people of Dallas who must live through the trauma brought on by this occurrence.
“Everyone – be they police or the people they are sworn to protect and serve – deserve to make it home safely to their families. Alton Sterling and Philando Castile also deserved to live, and my prayers are also with their families and friends.
“Recent events prove that America is descending into out-of-control gun violence. The Congress of the United States holds the power to address this problem, but powerful special interests have succeeded in blocking congressional action on legislation that could help keep guns out of the hands of violent criminals and the mentally ill. Common sense legislative solutions like requiring universal background checks, passing No Fly No Buy, and reinstituting the assault weapons ban, are long overdue. Another moment of silence is not enough. It’s time for Congress to pass common sense gun reform law NOW!”
