March 3, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Arthur D. Sidney, Rep. Hank Johnson’s (GA-04) Chief of Staff since 2009, has been awarded the 2016 Robert Harold Ogle Trailblazer Award by Congressional Black Associates for his outstanding work in Congress and his support and mentorship to numerous African-American staffers.

Since 1979, Congressional Black Associates has been dedicated to enhancing the political, social and economic capabilities of African Americans on Capitol Hill, in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the nation, and throughout the world.

“This award speaks volumes as to what kind of person Arthur is,” said Rep. Johnson. “He’s been a mentor to many young staffers over the years. The tone of professionalism he sets for my offices is of great benefit to me and the people of Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District.”

“It’s an honor to receive this recognition from my peers,” said Sidney, a 1995 cum laude graduate of Vassar College, 1998 graduate of the Howard University School of Law, and 1999 graduate of American University, Washington College of Law (LL.M). “Everything I do – everything the staff does – in the Washington, D.C. and District offices reflect upon the good work and legislative acumen of Congressman Johnson. I feel very privileged to work for such a great lawmaker and have the opportunity to help young professionals advance in their careers.”

Sidney accepted his award in a ceremony on Monday, February 29 in the Capitol Visitors Center Atrium.

The Robert Harold Ogle Trailblazer Award

Robert Harold Ogle was the first African American known to serve as a professional Senate committee staffer. Senate records show that Ogle was originally hired in 1919 as a “laborer” for the Senate Appropriations Committee, chaired by Senator Francis E. Warren of Wyoming. His title was later changed to “messenger” for the committee in 1921, and he was finally named an “additional clerk” in 1930.
