Rep. Johnson seeks to restore tuition help – cut under sequestration – for soldiers
Congressman pens letter urging colleagues to amend budget to allow soldiers to continue receiving help paying for school
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, today urged his colleagues on both sides of the aisle to amend the 2014 budget to allow service members to continue receiving tuition assistance benefits that were cut under the sequester.
In a letter to the entire House of Representatives, Rep. Johnson asks his colleagues to support the “Congressional Black Caucus substitute that restores these harmful cuts to this important program by finding other savings that don’t come at the expense of hardworking families.”
Rep. Johnson, along with Reps. John Lewis (GA) and Gwen Moore (NY), penned the letter in support of the Fudge-Scott-Moore-Lee amendment to H. Con. Res. 25, the fiscal year 2014 budget resolution when it was considered on the House floor today.
The letter goes on to say: “Meeting this promise to our servicemen and women should be a top priority. The cuts to the Military Tuition Assistance Program would be devastating for countless families.”
