Congressman: Affordable Care Act critical to address health care disparities

CHJ_NCNWpanel._websiteLITHONIA, GA – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) participated as a panelist in the DeKalb Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) National Health Care Reform Tour at the Porter Sanford Center on April 12.

The Tour – “Know Your Rights – Protect Your Health” – which will also travel to Miami, New Orleans, Detroit and New York among other destinations – is an information and education tour that highlights how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) closes the health care disparity gap.

Rep. Johnson joined Anton Gunn, Regional Director for the Department of Health & Human Services Region IV, DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson, Georgia State Rep. Pam Stephenson, Oakhurst Medical Center CEO Jeffrey Taylor and Georgians for a Healthy Future Executive Director Cindy Zeldin.

“The facts are that the ACA represents the most significant federal effort in more than 50 years to reduce health disparities and improve overall health of underserved communities,” said Johnson. “Whether health care disparities are due to place, race, socio-economic status or other reasons, dramatic health disparities must be eliminated.”

Prior to the panel discussion, NCNW held free health screenings, including blood pressure, cholesterol, HIV/AIDS and diabetes.
