Congressman raises awareness of March 31 deadline for uninsured to sign up for coverage this year

ATLANTA – Today, Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) joined U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius, Chairman of the Fulton County Commission Dr. John Eaves and President and CEO of the Center for Black Women’s Wellness Jemea Dorsey to highlight upcoming local efforts aimed at educating and enrolling consumers in affordable health coverage in Atlanta.

The deadline to enroll and receive coverage this year is March 31. The next enrollment period is in November for coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2015.

“With 21 days of open enrollment left – my top priority is reaching every American who needs access to quality, affordable insurance to help them understand how to sign up,” said Rep. Johnson.

“In my district alone, more than 165,000 people lack health insurance, but today because of the ACA they have a chance to access quality, affordable coverage without fear of discrimination or higher rates because of a preexisting health condition. They also now have the freedom to switch employers or start their own businesses without losing healthcare coverage.”

“I want to thank Congressman Johnson for helping spread the word that it’s not too late for Georgians to sign up for affordable health coverage, but they must act before March 31st,” said Sebelius. “Congressman Johnson is a great partner in our effort to protect families and help millions of Americans enroll in quality, affordable health coverage.”

Upcoming Enrollment Events: Tonight: 5 to 8 p.m. at the Exchange Park Recreation Center, 2771 Columbia Dr., Decatur, GA 30034 | Wednesday: The Health Initiative will be hosting at Emory University Midtown Hospital, 550 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, GA 30308.
