NORMANDY, FRANCE – U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, is part of a bipartisan and bicameral Congressional delegation to mark the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Allied D-Day Invasion.
On Friday, June 6, the delegation will take part in observances of the anniversary at Omaha Beach and Sword Beach, in which U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande will participate. The House delegation is led by House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-CA) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
“It’s an overwhelming honor to be part of this Congressional delegation paying tribute 70 years later to the soldiers who fought and died here to secure our liberty,” said Johnson. “The Allied invasion of June 6, 1944, on the beaches of Normandy was a turning point in modern history, and set the stage for all the freedom and progress we enjoy today. Looking out over Omaha and Sword beaches, I’m humbled and awed by their sacrifice and can truly say with all sincerity that these men seven decades ago saved the world.”
