Rep. Johnson Applauds FTC “Sharing Economy” Report, Renews Call for Hearing

November 17, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a staff report providing an assessment of the regulatory and competition policy implications of sharing economy platforms. The report follows a 2015 June FTC public workshop on the issue. In April of this year, Congressman Johnson, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee with jurisdiction over regulatory and competition policy, called for the FTC to issue this report based on the 2015 workshop and pressed his Republican colleagues for a hearing on the issue. He released the following statement on the report:

“I applaud the Commission for its thorough assessment of the sharing economy’s impact on regulatory, competition, and consumer protection policy,” Johnson said. “It is clear that this market, like any other innovative market, must operate in a regulatory framework that promotes and defends competition while protecting consumers. I will continue to monitor the issue closely as the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee with jurisdiction over these matters, and I renew my call to the Majority to hold a hearing on this important and timely issue, particularly in light of this report.”
