Rep. Johnson Announces $9.5 Million to Lower Working Georgians’ Energy Costs

April 22, 2022

Today, Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) announced that Georgia will receive $9.5 million in federal funds to bring down heating and cooling costs for working families. These investments, secured through last month's government funding legislation, will be used to slash Georgians' energy bills, provide crisis assistance and help weatherize homes.

"As working families grapple with rising global energy prices, it is essential that we bring down costs and ensure that Georgia homes remain safe and comfortable," said Rep. Johnson. "Thanks to Democrats' government funding legislation, a fourth round of federal energy assistance is heading to Georgia – helping vulnerable families pay their energy bills, bring down costs and weatherize their homes. As the Biden Administration delivers these investments to Georgia households, Congressional Democrats remain laser-focused on Building a Better America For The People: lowering costs across the board, growing paychecks and creating good-paying jobs."

This deeply needed funding is administered under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). These investments are especially critical for lower-income households and communities of color who continue to disproportionately feel the impacts of climate change and extreme weather.

The funding announced today represents the fourth round of LIHEAP assistance over the past year. In total, Congressional Democrats have fought for and won nearly $150 million in energy assistance for Georgia households since last May. Previous rounds were delivered through:

American Rescue Plan: $64 million
2021 Continuing Resolution: $71 million
Bipartisan Infrastructure Law: $4.5 million
