Rep. Hank Johnson's statement on Women's History Month

March 2, 2012

LITHONIA, GA – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) made the following statement in recognition of Women’s History Month:

“During Women’s History Month, let’s take the time to reflect on our past struggle for equality, take pride in our progress but be mindful of the distance we have yet to travel to fulfill our potential,” said Johnson.

“Women have always been central to my life – my sister, mother, wife and daughter – my colleagues in the county commission and in Congress – who have helped make me a better person and my world a better place.

I encourage all Americans to reflect on how women have shaped history and continue to move our country forward. Let’s celebrate women and their contributions to education, government, and medicine. Women make the world go ‘round. Women have contributed some of the most useful inventions in our society – the windshield wiper, electric hot water heater, and the medical syringe.

This year, as the subject of women’s health makes headlines we must battle any attempts to undermine women’s rights and take them back to a time when they had no control of their bodies and their health. We must listen to America’s women, who want the power to control their own bodies and their own future for their families.”
