Rep. Hank Johnson Calls for “Thorough Review” of Proposed Dow Chemical and DuPont Merger

December 11, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Henry C. “Hank” Johnson, Jr. (D-GA) today made the following statement concerning the announcement of a proposed merger of DuPont and Dow Chemical. Rep. Johnson is the ranking member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law (RRCAL), which exercises jurisdiction over antitrust laws and competition:

“The proposed merger of DuPont and Dow Chemical raises serious competition concerns and implications for consumers,” Johnson said. “If consummated, the combined entity will be one of the largest chemical and agricultural suppliers globally and would reportedly control well-more than one-third of the U.S. corn seed market. Furthermore, this transaction occurs during a period of mass consolidation across multiple industries, and there seems to be little preventing even further consolidation in the chemical and agricultural markets. Accordingly, it’s imperative that this transaction receives a thorough review.”
