Hank rallies to support 40th Anniversary of Equal Rights Amendment
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04) joined colleagues Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Sen. Robert Menendez, other elected officials and leading women’s advocacy groups for a rally on Capitol Hill to mark the 40th Anniversary of Congressional passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. The requisite number of states failed to ratify the ERA before the final deadline mandated by Congress of June 30, 1982 expired, so it was not adopted. Rep. Johnson is a cosponsor of Congresswoman Maloney’s new Equal Rights Amendment.
“Achieving personal and professional parity with men remains a challenge for many American women,” said Johnson. “As a cosponsor, I believe this landmark legislation will ensure equal Constitutional protection for all American citizens regardless of gender. Despite years of progress towards true gender equality, the need for the Equal Rights Amendment is greater today than ever before. With the Republican assault on women’s rights in full gear, now is the time for our voices to be heard – speak out, stand up and be counted.”
