ATLANTA – The AFL-CIO released its legislative scorecard yesterday. The scorecard grades how well our senators and representatives served working families in 2013. The web-based tool allows citizens to review the voting records of our elected officials from across the country on the most important issues for working families. In Georgia, we applaud the efforts of Rep. Hank Johnson, Rep. John Lewis, Rep. David Scott, and Rep. Sanford Bishop to fight for Georgia’s working families in Congress as measured by their high scores.

“This scorecard highlights who is really standing up for Georgia’s working families and not just giving lip service. Whether it was their role in preventing a government shutdown, vital to Georgia’s continued economic growth, or lending their voice to job creation legislation, we are grateful to have these working family champions in the halls of Congress. This scorecard also highlights the failure of the two U.S. Senators representing Georgia, Senator Saxby Chambliss and Senator Johnny Isakson, to vote yes for comprehensive immigration reform (S. 744). The three members of the Georgia Congressional Delegation who are seeking the United States Senate seat all failed to represent Georgia’s working families (Broun-24%, Kingston 16% Gingrey 19%). Instead they supported government shutdowns and actively blocked any meaningful legislation demanded by the hard working men and women of Georgia.” Charlie Flemming, President Georgia AFL-CIO

For the U.S. Senate, the AFL-CIO Legislative Scorecard tracked 18 votes, including Superstorm Sandy aid to devastated communities, job creation legislation, and measures to end the government shutdown. This innovative civic engagement tool also measured efforts to pass comprehensive immigration reform as well as votes to confirm nominees still awaiting appointments to the Labor Department and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

In the House, the AFL-CIO tracked 21 votes, including Superstorm Sandy aid to devastated communities, job creation legislation, measures to eliminate overtime pay, legislative attacks on labor and prevailing wage agreements, and efforts to weaken the NLRB.

The AFL-CIO Legislative Scorecard is another tool for citizens to engage their elected representatives and measure their support for the issues that matter most for Georgia’s working family.
