Congressman Johnson Announces $200K Award for Conyers Law Enforcement Mental Health, Wellness Initiative
CONYERS, GA – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) announced that the City of Conyers was awarded $200,000 through the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office). The funding, part of more than $600 million in awards provided nationwide, comes through the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA) program to support the mental health and wellness of law enforcement officers and staff.
“This $200,000 grant will directly benefit our law enforcement officers in Conyers by providing them with critical mental health resources and support,” said Congressman Johnson. “Our officers face tremendous challenges every day, and ensuring their well-being is essential not only for them but also for the safety and strength of our communities.”
The award is part of a broader national initiative to support state, local, tribal, and other entities through various COPS Office grant programs, including funding to hire new officers, improve school safety, and combat the opioid and methamphetamine crises. The LEMHWA program, specifically, aims to improve access to mental health services for law enforcement officers and staff, an increasingly critical issue for police departments nationwide.
In total, the COPS Office will distribute more than $600 million to support public safety initiatives, including:
- $157 million through the COPS Hiring Program (CHP) to hire nearly 1,200 new officers.
- $73 million for school safety improvements through the School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP).
- $25.1 million for crisis intervention teams and community policing development.
- $46 million to combat the opioid and methamphetamine crises.
“I commend the Department of Justice for recognizing the importance of investing in public safety and providing our local law enforcement with the tools they need to serve and protect,” Congressman Johnson added. “This funding will make a meaningful difference for the people of Georgia’s 4th District.”
