Congressional Courage: Rep. Johnson shares inspiring story
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) appeared in a Media Planet insert in The Washington Post on Monday to discuss overcoming his illness with hepatitis C and the need for more funding to combat the “silent epidemic” nationwide.
The piece titled “From Diagnoses to Cure,” Rep. Johnson opens up on how he overcame the disease, his work as a role model and solutions to deal with a disease that claims 12,000 to 15,000 lives per year and affects more than 3.2 million Americans.
The special section went to The Washington Post’s 1.5 million readers and online to stakeholders such as the American Liver Foundation, National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable, Hepatitis B Foundation and HealthPro Solutions for a total readership of more than 3 million.
Rep. Johnson appears in the article with his wife Mereda Davis Johnson, President and Mrs. Obama, and other celebrities including musicians Natalie Cole and Greg Allman.
“I take great pride in being a role model for others to take control of their illness and prevail,” said Johnson. “It’s imperative that all baby-boomers get tested.”
