On April 14, Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) visited the I-85 construction site where on March 30, sections of both north and southbound of I-85 collapsed due to a massive fire.

Construction is expected to be completed by Georgia-based C.W. Matthews Contracting Company by May 21. “The I-85 bridge rebuild is an example of what could be happening across our nation to improve our infrastructure and put people to work with good paying jobs, which helps invigorate our economy,” said Congressman Johnson who serves on the U.S. House Committee for Transportation and Infrastructure. “It is great to see Georgians out here working and getting the job done.”

GDOT staffers showed members of the tour a timeline with the highway projected opening to the public on June 15. “We hope that the next time we invite you all, we will be cutting the ribbon on the re-opening of this section of the interstate,” said Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry to tour attendees. “This critical project has been all hands on deck since the beginning. It is really important for us to get this interstate open as soon as possible.”

According to GDOT officials, 13 columns that will support the bridge structure have been poured, and work on the bridge caps is underway.

Officials also said one-third of the beams needed for the bridge have been made. In all, 61 beams are needed for the bridge.

Congressman Johnson was joined on the tour by Congressman John Lewis (GA-05) and Congressman Rob Woodall (GA-07), as well as several members of GDOT leadership.
