This Week In Washington
Dear Friends,
I'm in Washington this week to help pass President Biden's Build Back Better agenda, which would fund both physical infrastructure in transit and water systems and more, and human infrastructure — such as expanded health care access and free pre-K. Meanwhile, I am working to prevent a government shutdown and avoid a disastrous default on our national debt. I want to make sure you know how I am approaching these difficult, yet important issues.
You may have heard that the House is considering a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill that has already been approved by the Senate. This bill was designed to be approved by Congress at the same time as the larger $3.5 trillion Build Back Better Act (or reconciliation bill), which is a human infrastructure bill that builds the middle class with initiatives to empower women and previously marginalized communities through investments in childcare, paid family and medical leave, universal pre-K, home health care, workforce development, debt-free community college and more. Together, these bills represent the President's Build Back Better agenda, and they must be approved together.
The bipartisan infrastructure bill alone is insufficient to meet the need for investments that will rebuild our infrastructure and our middle class, while also responding to the climate crisis. Passage of this bill without a guarantee from the Senate that it will pass the Build Back Better Act would leave millions of Americans without the benefits they were promised, and that they desire. I am fighting for passage of the President's entire Build Back Better agenda.
I've also been working this week to bring heavy rail transit options to South DeKalb, lowering drug prices and protecting consumers who shop online. Further, I've voted to keep the government open and prevent default and voted to make key investments to improve the lives of servicemembers and military families, while also strengthening our national security.
I know the news out of Washington can often be confusing, but rest assured everything I do, every vote I take, I do with working Georgians and working families in mind.
That means working to lower prescription drug costs for millions of families, historic investment in roads and bridges, historic tax cuts for middle-class families, getting every American access to high-speed Internet and clean drinking water. It means lowering the costs of childcare and care for older Americans and tackling the climate crisis in a way that benefits our economy and acts against the terrible damage it's already doing to our country and the entire planet.
As always, I appreciate your time and feedback. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to represent you in Congress. If you have an issue with a federal government agency, please don't hesitate to call my district office at 770-987-2291.
Thank you!
