Honoring Our Veterans

Dear Friends,

Every Veterans Day, Americans come together to remember those who have served our country around the world in the name of freedom and democracy.

The debt that we owe to them is immeasurable.  Their sacrifices and those of their families are the foundation of our freedom. Without the brave efforts of all the soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen and their families, our country would not live so freely.

This is the first Veterans Day I can recall in a long time that we don't have troops involved in official combat operations. And for that, we can be very grateful.

It’s fitting that we said goodbye this week to Georgia’s most-famous veteran, former Senator, Veterans Administrator and Georgia Secretary of State Max Cleland. The indefatigable Max Cleland of Lithonia, Georgia, was a giant of a human being who, in overcoming all adversity, showed us how to build a winning life.

Although our paths did not cross frequently, often when we saw each other Max would grab me and bestow a big hug, and I would hug him right back. Highly accomplished, Max also exuded warmth and positivity, and treated all with kindness. I salute Max for a life well lived, and we will miss him greatly. My prayers go out to his entire family.

With Max as our guide, more than ever, we must renew our commitment to keep our promises to the nation’s more than 2 million troops and reservists, their families, and 23 million veterans, including more than 800,000 in Georgia and more than 50,000 in the Fourth District.

Please take some time today to honor our veterans. The Walk of Heroes will hold its annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Veterans War Memorial Park in Conyers, which is located inside Black Shoals Park at 2825 Black Shoals Road, Conyers. For more information, visit www.walkofheroes.org.

As always, I appreciate your time and feedback. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to represent you in Congress. If you have an issue with a federal government agency, please don’t hesitate to call my district office at 770-987-2291.
