Rep. Johnson: 'It's time for a tax code that's fair to the middle class, and will strengthen the economy'

April 17, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tax Day, Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04) reiterated his call for Congress to take steps to restore tax fairness for the middle class.

“Although I do not endorse the Fair Tax, I stand with my friends in the Fair Tax movement in calling for fundamental reform of the tax code, which we all agree is unfair and needs to be changed,” said Johnson.
Rep. Johnson said Congress should also give consideration to the Buffett Rule, which ensures that people making more than $1 million per year do not pay a lower tax rate than middle-class Americans – and was called for by President Obama in his State of the Union Address.
“It is simply unfair to ask middle class Americans to pay a higher tax rate than millionaires and billionaires,” said Rep. Johnson. “On Tax Day, I join the many Americans who are calling upon Congress to hold hearings to assess the viability of the various proposals for reform, including the Buffett Rule and so-called Fair Tax. It’s time to simplify the tax code instead of being mired in what is today a convoluted, complex tax system.”
