Rep. Johnson’s statement on Trump Pulling Out of the Iran Nuclear Deal

Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) released the following statement after President Donald Trump announced he will restore U.S. economic sanctions on Tehran, a move that effectively pulls the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal (JCPA), a 2015 agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, China, Germany and the European Union that halted Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions:

“The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is working – with historic restrictions and invasive inspections preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and making the American people and our allies safer,” said Rep. Johnson. “Unilaterally walking away from this agreement will leave America isolated instead of Iran, weaken our international credibility during a critical moment with North Korea and recklessly put the catastrophic threat of a nuclear-armed Iran back on the table.  The Trump Administration’s reckless, rash decisions are no substitute for real global leadership. Democrats will continue to show strong, smart leadership to keep our country safe.”
