Press Release

DECATUR, GA – Senior Judiciary Committee member and Chairman of the Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet subcommittee, Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) released the following statement on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatening to block two Muslim Democratic members of Congress — both of whom are prominent women of color and highly critical of his country — from visiting Israel next week:

“Israel’s exclusion of Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) shows great weakness and lack of respect for democratic ideals. Banning duly elected members of Congress from entering Israel in route to Palestine all while they seek continued military assistance from the U.S. is unconscionable. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must have forgotten the Democracy memo -- in an open and free society just because someone is critical of you it doesn’t give you the right to curtail their rights. This is a dangerous precedent, and I urge Bibi to reconsider.”
