Rep. Johnson’s statement on Equal Pay Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) released the following statement recognizing Equal Pay Day, which marks how far into the year a woman must work, on average, to earn as much as a man earned the previous year. A new report from the National Partnership for Women and Families shows the Fourth Congressional District of Georgia has the highest pay equity between men and women of any Georgia congressional district and is one of just 13 nationwide found to have pay equity:

 “There are many exceptional and special things about the Fourth Congressional District, and equal pay is one of them,” said Johnson. “While I’m encouraged that we have pay equity in my district – or something close to it – the truth is that we have so much work to do in Georgia and the nation, where the pay gap is still unacceptable – especially among Native American, Latina and African-American women. We as lawmakers must do more to address pay disparity – and that starts by passing the Paycheck Fairness Act. To borrow a phrase from Fannie Lou Hamer – ‘we are sick and tired’ of unequal pay.”
