Rep. Hank Johnson’s statement on the threats made to Berta Caceres’ family

August 7, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04), author of the Berta Cáceres Human Rights in Honduras Act, issued the following statement after news that the slain human rights hero’s family was being threatened by violence:

“We provide millions of dollars in security assistance to Honduras every year but these same forces have been found to attack and kill environmental, labor and human rights activists like Berta without any effective response from the Honduran authorities,” said Rep. Johnson. “Now we learn that the slain human rights defender’s family is being threatened with violence. It’s time for our nation to stand up and be true to our values by sending a stronger message. By leveraging security assistance and multilateral loans, we can place real and lasting pressure on the Honduran government to protect its activists and pursue those responsible for these outrageous crimes.”
