WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) recognized Arabia Mountain High School as one of just 78 schools nationwide that were named “Green-Ribbon Schools” by the Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency at a reception in Washington, D.C., on June 4.
Green-ribbon schools are recognized for implementing a comprehensive commitment to reducing their environmental footprint, promoting health, and ensuring high-quality environmental and outdoor education that prepares students for the 21st century clean-energy global economy. The federal government began recognizing awarding green ribbons to leading schools around the country in September 2011.
“Arabia Mountain High School is a model in my Congressional district and across the country,” said Rep. Johnson, who attended the reception at the Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue. “This is an enormous achievement that shows the value of conservation and green design and highlights a successful collaboration between government and schools. This award will inspire Arabia Mountain students and help improve the next generation of schools.”
Rep. Johnson joined U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair Nancy Sutley and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson, along with Arabia Mountain Principal LaShawn McMillan and Assistant Principal Tim Wells, at the awards ceremony.
