Johnson Supports Funding for Ukraine, Taiwan; Votes Against Funding Israel’s War in Gaza

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) voted today in support of the series of critical security supplemental bills -- save for Israel’s War in Gaza -- that provide much-needed defense assistance to our allies and partners around the world.

Rep. Johnson said sending more offensive weapons to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was an untenable position.

“The April 1st bombing of Iran’s diplomatic facility in Syria was a violation of international law and recklessly escalated tensions, which threaten to drag the U.S. into a regional war,” said Rep. Johnson. “At the same time, Netanyahu continues to ramp up the military assault on Rafah, where close to a million Gazan’s have sought safety. With more than 33,000 deaths, 70 percent of whom were women and children, now is not the time to issue a blank check to the Netanyahu government.”

As far as funding for Ukraine, Rep. Johnson said that the Ukrainian people are out of time. And that it was well past time that the House act decisively in America’s national security interests.

“Donald Trump and his extreme MAGA Republicans have endangered our national security by siding with Vladimir Putin and blocking the resources that are urgently needed to sustain Ukraine’s fight to protect its democracy,” he said. “Today, we finally respond to Putin’s tyrannical war of aggression.”

Rep. Johnson released a statement with 20 Democratic colleagues after voting against H.R. 8034, the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act.

President Joe Biden said he is prepared to sign the measures into law.
